  1. Crowrider: An Inquiry on Radical Surrender

July 12, 2012 by Laura Tabet

As I wrote in my last post we are in the midst of an epic Trickster workshop. And this week things really amp up as Mars joins the ongoing Uranus-Pluto square creating what’s called a T-Square. A T-Square occurs when two planets (Mars and Uranus) are in opposition aspect (180 degress) to each other and both making a square aspect of (90 degrees) to a third planet (Pluto).

Whenever planets are in aspect of each other we are challenged to bring their energies within our psyche into a co-creative dance.

So when the God of War, Will and Action (Mars) busts in to contribute to the ongoing dance between Uranus (The Trickster God of Revolution, Liberation and The Unexpected) and Pluto (The Underworld God of Deep Transformation, Death and Rebirth) it can get a little spicy! (more…)

  2. Crowrider: Monkey Rides the Wave, Trickster Knows How

June 14, 2012 by Laura Tabet

Monkey vs Shark by Teja AstawaI had an amazing time at Oakland’s monthly Art Murmur. It has become quite the event drawing throngs of supporters out to see the exploding local art scene. It’s feel grateful that my surrounding culture so deeply appreciates and serves the arts! And it was a super fun Gemini Sun start to the gathering and cavorting energy of the Summer!

On my walk home as I cruised down the last street of art galleries I was riveted by one last painting. This painting depicted a handful of monkeys surfing on tsunami-sized waves as a volcano erupted in the background.

The image immediately reminded me of a talk I heard back in February by Liu Ming on the Year of the Dragon. He described our current Dragon Year as a year of limitless possibility. Yet, contrary to my first impression, he explained that limitless isn’t always good. Limitless energy comes in the form of tsunami’s – it can be overwhelming and if we don’t work with it well it can be quite overwhelming.

However he explained that one of the archetypes that thrives in a tsunami-type year was the Monkey! Monkeys are clever, they see big waves as a chance to surf and play. They know how to ride it out! They can climb to the top of a tree, jump on the back of a floating piece of cargo and surf, they know just when to slip out before things get uncomfortable and they know how to read the signs. 3. Crowrider: I’m Your Venus

May 10, 2012 by Laura Tabet

Over the weekend I had a perfectly nourishing and wild Beltane celebration with a group of close friends. Lilacs, bees, butterflies, a rushing river, delicious foods, a gigantic cauldron full of fire, full moon rays, drumming, singing and ritual merry-making – my soul was as happy as it could be!

Beltane is a holiday devoted to our sensual relationship to life, Venus, and the Sun is also presently in Taurus (ruled by Venus). So the weekend got me pondering the following question:

What gets your Venus going – what is Her version of joy, beauty, love and abundance? How can I serve, delight, feed, nourish and honor Venus?

When you honor Venus she loves you back with abundance, flow, meaning, sufficiency, aliveness and wealth.

You can also look to your astrology chart for more information. Venus is the principle of relationship, money, beauty, eros, art and aesthetic value. What house and sign do you find Venus? This will tell you a lot about the area of your life and in what manner your Venus is vivified. (Download a free chart here: JanSpiller.com)

My Venus is in Pisces in the 12th house ruled by Pisces. My Venus gets turned on by the realm of imagination, metaphor, dreams, formlessness, poetry and the arts. So after a weekend of imaginal, dreamy reveries my Venus was juiced up! So I wasn’t surprised, though still delighted when I showed up at work on Monday and my client gave me a poem! I found myself saying to her “that a poem is about the best gift a person can give me!” And that’s true! My Venus was so happy! (more…)

  4. Crowrider: CRAZY 101

April 12, 2012 by Laura Tabet

Here’s what I’ve been hearing a lot of lately: “I don’t know how to fix this” “I am overwhelmed” “I can’t hold it together anymore” “I’m exhausted” “Nothing is working”” “I’m FU**ED” “I feel crazy”

Mars Retrograde turned the first three months of 2012 into advanced, required and uncomfortable human coursework. We’ve all been asked to identify and confront the most stubborn, ongoing issues that seemingly evade transformation. Add Mercury Retrograde into the mix and the last month has been a perfect recipe for going CRAZY! Nothing seems to be working, it’s glaringly obvious and yet there’s a cosmic brake on our creative action.

While Mercury is out of retrograde now and Mars is moving out of retrograde over the weekend, I want to collect some of the uncomfortable insights of this challenging human workshop. Over the last few month it has felt like the most obvious principles of good living that I have been studying and collecting my whole adult life, that I even teach people about!! were out the door. That’s the nature of crazy! So today I’m anchoring myself back into the basics.

So here’s the question: what is actually happening when we feel crazy? And how do we get back to creative sanity? (more…)

  5. CROWRIDER: Aloha Happiness

March 8, 2012 by Laura Tabet

I watched an amazing movie last night, a documentary called “Happy.” It addressed the true causes of happiness and included clips from many different cultures as well as the latest neuroscience and positive psychology research. It was really well done and meaningful. I highly recommend it!

It seems that 40% of our happiness is up to us and the choices that we make.

Only 10% has to do with circumstances like income level, weather or where we live, and a given genetic baseline makes up the other 50% of our capacity.

The biggest focus of the movie covered the considerable amount of impact our choices, activities and consciousness have on our state of being.

    So what creates happiness?

    1. Physical activity, especially novel activity, causes the release of Dopamine, the main neurotransmitter associated with happiness. Move your body and change it up.
    2. Social support. Tending to our friendships and building community has a huge impact on our happiness. Feed and nourish your connections!
    3. Practice compassion and gratitude. A study where people wrote down a list of 10 things they were grateful for every Sunday created a big rise in happiness.
    4. Do activities that get you into “the zone.” Doing the things that fully engage us in the present moment and creative process. Like playing an instrument, making art, cooking and gardening.
    5. Giving to others. There were many studies that showed the increase of service and offering compassion to others increases our happiness. (more…)

  6. Crowrider: God is Alive, Magic Is Afoot- Neptune in Pisces

February 9, 2012 by Laura Tabet

I have written a bit about other collective astrological developments in past writings:

    1. Pluto’s transit through Capricorn and the great transformation of the Father Principle of structure, culture, institutions and ways we organize our world.
    2. I’ve written about Uranus transiting through Aries, the great revolutionary energy sweeping through the warrior archetype – catalyzing our basic need for autonomy and liberation.
    3. And I have written about Saturn moving through Libra and the law of limitation/restriction asking us to take responsibility for the basic way we come into relationship with life.

But today I want to honor another extremely significant transit. On Feb 4th Neptune re-entered Pisces (after a brief retrograde) and is here to stay until 2026. In our time, Neptune is as big of a player in the global shifts as Pluto and Uranus. Neptune brings a powerful sea change sweeping up from the deep oceans of our watery, empathic, dreaming, and interconnected selves – imagination from the deep, compassionate heart that can guide the way in this time of re-creation. 7. Crowrider: Learning From Limitation

January 12, 2012 by Laura Tabet

If you are anything like me, one week into the New Year you may be sharing my current prayers.

Please, please Universe, Let me return to the order and rhythm of my own life.

Please, please Universe, Let me return to my own body, my own purpose and goals.

Please, please Universe, Let me be provided for and supported.

Please, please Universe, Let me find the daily and weekly structures that will help me move my goals forward.

I don’t think I’m the only one that marvels at how much time and energy it takes to return from the rituals and sacred festivals of this season.

What I notice about my prayers is that they all have a rather Saturnian ring to them. (pun intended). And, of course, here we find ourselves with the Sun stationed in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, or as the Greeks called him Chronos (time). How fitting that my prayers are perfectly suited for the god of limits, boundaries, structures, and authority. The Father Principle.

Not only is our relationship to the Father principle enlivened this month, it is going to be solidly on the altar for many years to come, as Pluto (the principle of change and transformation) moves through Capricorn. Our relationship to this principle will greatly impact the transitions that we have imagined 2012 to be. (more…)

  8. Crowrider: Hidden Boxes, Messages from the Past

December 8, 2011 by Laura Tabet

Since mid-October, I’ve spent every spare second I have, many long three-day weekends, at my mother’s getting her house ready to sell. Sorting through closets, drawers, garages, trunks, rummaging through old photos, baby cloths, letters, old jewelry, etc. My mom has lived at this house for 20 years. There’s a lot of stuff to go through. We are also painting bathrooms, updating hardware, reframing broken artwork, repotting plants, selling old beds, buying new ones, and putting together IKEA furniture for the staging of the house.

    We are re-viewing and re-making a life.

Astrologically, this is a pretty powerful time to be sorting through my mother’s basement. Mercury went into retrograde on Nov 24th and will stay there until Dec 13th. We are also in the middle of a solar eclipse (Nov. 25th) and a lunar eclipse (Dec. 10th). Mercury retrogrades invite us to review, revision, reorganize, revamp and retell our story before moving ahead with the business of manifestation. The two eclipses push hidden energies from the unconscious into the light. There is an emotional volatility to the process as eruptions in the psyche make their way to the surface. (more…)

  9. Crowrider: Entering The Dream Cave and Living Your Dreams

November 10, 2011 by Laura Tabet

    Hearing the Call

As we enter the deep heart of Autumn, we feel the loss of light and the darkness beckons us. At this time, I am aware of a familiar turn within, as the soul hears the changing of the drum beat. She is guided now, not by the light of the outer sun, but by a subtle glow of barely burning embers within.

Some of you may hear the drum calling you into the dream cave and resist it. Many of us are still scared of the dark. So much of our identity is anchored out there in other’s approval, in tangible accomplishments, and in our outer role as mother, father, or friend.

In the old myths they talk of the cinder biters – a tattered, hungry, orphaned youngster who is drawn to the quiet and stillness of a dying fire. The hungry adolescent in each of us is the one who longs to know the Deep Self and to become who we truly are but feels forgotten, unrecognized and unwanted. This part knows that when the soul is hungry for the nourishment of Self, one must lie, for some time in the ashes, stirring the cinders with a far-off look in the eye. It is right to go far away. It is a safe journey and a necessary one. It is in this quiet place that the inner world reminds us, feeds us, whispers to us of who we are and the dream of the soul. And it is here that we feed the fire. Our inward attention is like oxygen and wood to the desires, longings and visions of the soul. We need the fire, but it needs us too. (more…)

  10. Crowrider: The Art of Relationship

October 13, 2011 by Laura Tabet

With four planets in Libra (Sun, Saturn, Mercury and Venus) my mind and experience is centered on relationships. This astrological concentration is highlighted this week by the full moon in Aries (Tuesday the 11th) and the ongoing transit of Uranus through Aries, who’s opposing energies really light up the ongoing tension between our need for radical, individual freedom and our longing for and commitment to our relationships.

As this topic of Self and Other has been meandering through my awareness this living inquiry has been fed by two things: 1) collaborating on a art show and 2) reading Joanna Macy’s, Coming Back To Life and Lynne McTaggert’s book The Bond.

The journey of collaborating on 15 art pieces with another distinct, creative and strong individual (both of us are Aries) has been a phenomenal workshop on these themes of self, other and creativity. In the end we thankfully found our collaborating groove but it took us many uncomfortable stages before we got there. There is an art to collaboration. Libra in fact, ruled by Venus, rules both art and relationship highlighting that relationship is in face a creative process. (more…)
